Auction Day

Last Saturday (June 16) we went to our first (technically, our second) auction. We were prepared to bid big bucks for this beautiful Ralph Lauren chair and ottoman, even though, really, we have no business buying furniture at this point in our house reno (yet to begin).

We set our max bidding price to 850$, but sadly, a consignment store owner won it at 900$. We were the 2nd to last bidders. However, we did win one Danish dining table, a map chest, and an oak dresser during the catalog auction (more formal, big ticket items are posted online with pictures and descriptions) and during the outside tented auction (more casual, selling odds and ends) we won two picture frames and a smaller dining table we plan to use as a desk in the office. Best part: they'll willing to ship our winnings for free!

    1. Let me say this: participating in an auction is a) super exciting, and b) a total power-trip. Even when you bid once at $50 and it ends up going for $300 your heart rate still goes through the roof. And when that auctioneer keeps looking at you and looking at the other bidder, and the back at you, well... it makes you feel important. The littlest knob of the head --- or even a hand flinch --- and you are bumping your bid up $50. As Jordan would say, it makes me want to puff up my chest and light a cigar.
