PLANS

Second floor renos are right around the corner. Our contractor Kim estimates he'll start last week of September~first week of October. And I am starting to feel the pressure!
We have to get all our ducks in a row over the next few weeks and that means:

figuring out 2 unique tile schemes (for bathroom floor, shower floor, shower walls)
finding 2 vanities
picking out shower and sink hardware
picking out 2 toilets
finding a chandelier and two vanity sconces
figuring out the wiring (for 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, one hallway, and a string of smoke detectors)
ordering shower glass
finding a radiator
ordering 2 shower pans
finish quite a bit of demo

amongst other things, and to make matters more complicated, some of the items on the list are interdependent - like finding a vanity and figuring out the size of the shower, which dictates the size of the shower pan and the amount of tile to order.

anyhow, the tile bit is actually a lot of fun.
For the master bath, the plan is to go ritzy, jazzy, luxe, spa-like, marble, marble, MARBLE! My favorite marble is calacatta, which is mucho expensive, but so much prettier, imo, than the oft-heard cararra.
calacatta marble

I'm on the hunt for deals and am hoping to get it at ~14$/sqft. At tile shops, they're usually on the order of 30$/sqft (YIKES). Our bathroom is roughly 80sqft; you do the math. For shower walls, I'm thinking, keep it simple, classic, and cheap  - white subway tile.
ahh, so calming. Our shower walls will look like those tile walls.

For the shower floor we like 2in hex mosaic, also in marble. We've been advised to use the same type of marble....unfortunately, calacatta hext mosaic is ~17$/sqft at a minimum and our shower's going to be ~3ftx4ft.

I have an estimate for shower glass doors of 1200$. Yes, the price makes me faint, but I'm not budging on shower glass.

On ebay, I bought:

pretty!

This will hang in front of the vanity mirror and the rest of the room will be lighted by some pot lights.

For the shared bathroom (for guests, future kids), this is our inspiration bathroom:
mostly light and white with some bold splashes of color. love the penguin.

I love everything about this bathroom, especially the penguin. We like the idea of slate floor and white walls, perhaps even an accent wall. So here's what I found at my local tile shop:

Light gray pebbles for the shower floor (14$/sqft), local, Vermont quarried slate (4.25$/sqft) for the bathroom floor and subway tiles (again) for shower walls. 4.25$/sqft??!?!?!?!! Now Dan wants to do both bathrooms with slate.

So you see, plans are coming along, but there's A LOT more to do still...

Dan edit
I found a penguin for our bathroom. What do you think, yoom?

I felt the pressure to make all the decisions at once, too! Sounds like you have a lot of it figured out already, though. Can't wait to read more!

  3. That penguin looks a little like a mole, Dan. I think you can do better. Maybe even go for more of a Rockhopper Penguin- they have got some flare.
Ayumi- I LOVE the new light fixture
